What is cross contamination?

Cross contamination occurs when harmful microorganisms, usually bacteria and viruses are spread between people, pieces of equipment, or within the body. There are plenty of opportunities for cross-contamination to occur. Most of these opportunities may be expected, but frequent handwashing and strict sterilization procedures can help stop the risks associated with cross contamination.

Why must dental instruments be cleaned before being sterilized?

Cleaning should precede all disinfection and sterilization processes. Cleaning involves the removal of debris (organic or inorganic) from an instrument or device. If visible debris is not removed, it will interfere with microbial inactivation and can compromise the disinfection or sterilization process.

Can disposable dental instruments be reused?

If a dental instrument is intended as single use, it should be used on one patient and then discarded properly. If a disposable item is intended for more than one use, it must be reprocessed under the same guidelines as those used for any other item and should be thoroughly sterilized between uses.
