A clean and tidy work environment boosts productivity and is good for your own peace of mind. Keeping your workspace organized is easy enough in theory but when deadlines are looming, it is usually the first to drop off your priority list. With desks providing the perfect host for bacteria, maintaining a strict cleaning schedule should be a priority. In addition, a cluttered, messy and even dirty desk doesn’t just prevent us from working pleasantly and productively, they can also impact how others view us.
Time to clean up your act!
Here are quick tasks you can perform once a week to keep everything clean, clear and crumb free!
1) Purge the Paper
Cluttered offices don’t happen because you simply forgot how to get rid of garbage. Most often, the paper just gets pushed aside rather than filed or thrown away, then it quickly becomes a pile of things that do not belong on the desk. Grab a trash can, recycling bin or cardboard box and sort through the papers on your desk. Anything that you no longer need should go straight in the recycle bin or shredder. Everything else should be sorted into a handy folder or your in-tray.
2) Ditch the Junk
From an empty gum package to the pile of pens that no longer work, it is easy to let junk accumulate on and in your desk. This makes it look more untidy and makes it harder to clean. Get rid of anything that no longer works or that you no longer use.
3) Your Office Is Not Your Closet
You likely a few random pieces of clothing strewn around the office. You probably have a sweater or scarf in case it gets cold, or maybe an extra pair of shoes just in case your feet start hurting in the heels. You don’t necessarily need to get rid of these things, but be sure you limit the amount of clothing you leave at the office and store them neatly so your workspace doesn’t start looking like a teenager’s room.
4) Get Out the Spray Bottle
Give your desk a good spritz with an antibacterial cleaning spray and wipe your desk with a cloth or paper towel. Keep in mind that our phones and computer equipment are a haven for germs, so keeping them nice and clean could even help keep you healthier. Be sure to unplug your keyboard, mouse and desk phone before spraying. Don’t forget to wipe down your screen. Get a hold of canned air if you can, and blow the dust out of your keyboard and CPU.
5) Don’t Forget the Floor
If your office doesn’t have a regular cleaning team, carpets and flooring can look very dingy in no time. Run the vacuum or sweep the area to keep your workspace looking tidy from top to bottom.
